Lanterns of Marrow

★★★★★ 4.6 Editor rating

Lanterns of Marrow is quiet, atmospheric, and a little haunting. You wander through a fog-bound coastal town solving environmental puzzles and piecing together what happened to the people who left. The art does a lot of heavy lifting, and the ambient sound design is genuinely lovely with headphones.

Puzzles are logical rather than obtuse, so you rarely need a walkthrough. When you do get stuck, the game leaves subtle clues in the scenery instead of hiding solutions behind guesswork. Everything runs offline, which suits a game you'll want to play in the dark with no notifications.

It's a fairly short experience, maybe four hours, but every scene earns its place. If you like slow, story-driven adventures, this one stuck with us longer than most.
